Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) Compliance

Arcadia University

We evaluated several vendors whose products were HEOA compliant and were overwhelmed by the performance, the countless number of available P2P, Trojans, botnets...etc., rules and the ease of use of the HaloNS "SafeMedia Security Appliance".

Once we placed the SafeMedia security appliance in-line, we instantly were able to identify and report on those users who were in violation of our "Internet Acceptable Use Policy" and our "Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) Policy". SafeMedia's customer support help in setting up the appliance within our infrastructure with amazing speed (less than 1/2 hour).

This security appliance is truly remarkable. We are a very happy and HEOA compliant customer.

HughesTech Labs Hughes Technologies, Inc.,

A recognized authority in Network Security System Evaluations, Published it's review Oct 12, 2011 of HALONS. Below is the complete evaluation published by HughesTech Labs:
* * * * * *

In the past 2 weeks, HughesTech Lab's review team has had the opportunity to test SafeMedia's new network security system HALONS through many in-depth test suites of network security, intrusion detection, intrusion prevention, network penetration and, unintentional information disclosure.

Before we started the test; we contacted two of SafeMedia's current users. The 1st was a Fortune 100 enterprise class organization with dispersed supercomputer data centers. This organization deployed 4 units of HALONS protecting their network infrastructure which generates over 6 Billion dollars of revenue per-year. This organization stated that they have tested 4 other competitors systems, and selected SafeMedia's network security system based on functionality, performance and price.

The other user is in the higher education field, a university which has experienced massive unauthorized use of their network in non-educational use, and had problems with RIAA. The university stated that after evaluating all the name brands of network security system providers, SafeMedia won by large margin because HALONS offered speed, accuracy less false positives and more false negatives. This university selected the managed services approach SafeMedia offers to utilize SafeMedia's network security expertise.

The system we received from SafeMedia was shipped configured to our network and subnets so installation was 5 minutes and the system was up and running. One of SafeMedia's Engineers was with us on the telephone throughout the very short installation, and helped in the initial selection of the rule sets and counter measures, which we will address later. Our team was pleasantly surprised that there was no detectable latency in our network.

SafeMedia's network security system offers a wide range of features and advantages not available from other providers of network security appliances- to our knowledge. To save some blog time we will summarize our test results, but we welcome any one requiring additional info to contact us.

  1. SafeMedia's network security system offers many new features in the network security market such as:

  2. Network Security Widgets

    Total Unique Alerts Yesterday Widget

    Payload Widget

  3. HALONS is an end-to-end network security system with over 45,000 rules in 78 different categories. HALONS supports additional probes in sensitive subnets with a central alert and rule management database and graphical interface. Below is an example of the rule set/priority selection graphical interface. We were able to activate and reactive any rule set and reload the new rules automatically without disrupting the traffic on our network. This has been a constant request from many users of network security systems, to be able to alter the rule groups on the fly without reconfiguring the system.
  4. Edit User Engine Rule Groups Widget

  5. SafeMedia's network security system offers two detection engines running side by side: kernel engine deploys Protocol Behavior Counter Measures and Rules. The kernel engine is a patented technology offered by SafeMedia for the 1st time, and run at wire speed since it is part of the kernel. All counter measures and rules deployed in the kernel engine have been developed, and continually undated by SafeMedia RISK PREVENTION staff. The user engine runs in userspace and deploys a massive number of rules shared from over 250,000 users worldwide such as Military, Intelligence Agencies, VRT, ET PRO, DSheild, and Shadow server to mention few.
  6. User Engine Rules Viewer/Editor Widget

Engine Services Enable/Disable User Engine Enable/Disable Kernel Engine Widget

  7. SafeMedia's network security system offers a unique GRAPHICAL INTERFACE SYSTEM which we did not see any equivalent system from any other network security providers. It is web based; widget based interface which allows each user to design their own dash board. We are posting some screen shots.
  8. An important feature offered by SafeMedia's network security system is the ability to measure the performance of each individual rule and counter measure, additionally HALONS enables the user to edit each rule, activate or deactivate, deploy the rule in a block mode( drop the packet) or just an alert mode. This is another feature which to our knowledge is not available from current network security suppliers.
  9. Rule Performance Widget

  10. One of the most important features in the system is the complete control SafeMedia's network security system gives the user updating counter measures and rules. SafeMedia claims they update their rules sets every 3 hours making available to the user to download a GZ pack with all the rules. From that point on the user is in complete control of allowing or disallowing the new rules or the updated rules from becoming part of the active rule sets used in by the engines.

Final word from all what we have tested, we can say that SafeMedia offers a new paradigm in the network security field which is much needed in today's environment.

More Testimonials

"We installed the Halo NS unit and immediately stopped all peer to peer file transfers. We have not received a single copyright complaint since the unit went online. The support staff has been very attentive at helping us get the unit online and has even adapted the unit to meet our specific needs. The automatic updates and constantly improving graphical interface have minimized the maintenance while allowing access to detailed reporting of peer to peer connections that have been intercepted. Given the level of protection achieved via Halo NS, we are confident that our students are well protected from the inherent risk associated with peer to peer file-sharing."
Michael Guyear, Computing and Network Services

"Halo NS immediately provided our customer with P2P protection and within 3-4 days had "given back" almost half of their bandwidth. Little did they know that multiple P2P programs were running constantly and stealing valuable bandwidth in addition to the illegal files that were downloaded. As a reseller, we see the real advantage of the targeted solution provided by Halo NS, the right product/service, at the right time, to solve an ever increasing customer pain point to satisfy our clients."
